Budgeting for the Kitchen of Your Dreams

The kitchen is the heart and soul of the home. It is where family members and close friends gather to share meals, conversation and good times. So it makes sense that your kitchen reflects your personality and looks its best. But high traffic areas, like kitchens, show their age quickly. And with remodeling costs so high, a new kitchen is out of the question, right? Well, not quite.

This article from eHow.com explains how you can have the kitchen of your dreams even if you are working from a budget.

1.   Evaluate your real needs: What needs to be replaced and what is in good enough condition that you could leave it alone for now? Is the flooring in good condition? If it is leave it and design around it. You can still have a brand new looking kitchen even if you do not completely remodel the entire room. This can help to save you several thousand dollars. You will also need to assess the lighting in the room. Is it adequate? Do you need to add ambient lighting? Task lighting? Lighting can transform a kitchen from boring to extraordinary. Conversely, poor lighting can make even the greatest kitchens look drab. Finally, you will need to consider your storage needs. Do you need taller cabinets, or maybe even smaller cabinets? Do you want to add that pantry you have always wanted? These are the types of questions you need to ask yourself. If you carefully decide these things it will help make your dream kitchen a reality.

2.   Know what labor you are capable of doing it will save you money: Doing small tasks yourself can save you loads of money on installation fees. But do not try to tackle a job that is out of your skill level. You should always leave bigger remodeling projects to the professionals. If you incorrectly hang your cabinets, it will cost you more money in the long run when you have to have them professionally re-hung in a year or two.

3.   Know how much you really have to spend: Figure out your budget and stick to it. There are all types of kitchen appliances and accessories to fit all sorts of budgets. You may have to make some tough choices (maybe you can’t afford the exact cabinets you wanted), but going over budget is not an option.

4.   When the designer is discussing your remodel with you interview him/her carefully: You want a remodeler/designer who is willing to work with you to accomplish your goals on your budget.
